Greek Ambassador in Washington, DC

Theocharis Lalakos

Theocharis Lalakos was born in Athens in 1957. He holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from Massachusetts Amherst College and a Master of International Relations from the Johns Hopkins University School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS). He was admitted to the diplomatic service in 1986.

In 2016 he was appointed Ambassador of Greece to the United States, having served in Washington in the past in the position of Counselor for Political Affairs in the period 2000-2004.

He has served as Consul in Sydney and as Consul General of Greece in Alexandria, Egypt, and has served two terms at the Embassy of Greece in Ankara (1994-1998 and 2010-2013), where he gained a deep knowledge of Greek-Turkish relations and the Cyprus issue.

During his term as Director-General for Common Foreign and Security Policy of the EU (2009-2010), he had the opportunity to represent our country in the processes among the member states for forming common positions of the European Union in foreign affairs.

As Head of the Liaison Office for the Hellenic Republic in Skopje (2013-2016), he worked for the development and improvement of relations, managing a series of complex crises, with the more recent one being that of refugee flows.

He is married to Anna Michalopoulou and they have two adult children, Errikos and Myrto.
