The then President of the Republic of Cyprus, George Vassiliou, of Arcadian descent, visits Vitina-Arcadia, the land of his ancestors.
During his visit, he said, “Since 2000 BC, the Arcadians have been in Cyprus and it is no accident that the Cypriot dialect is Arcadian. The bonds continued and strengthened over the centuries. During the national liberation struggle the Cypriots came and fought along with the Arcadians at the fall of Tripolitsa. I am really moved by being here with you andby being doubly Arcadian. Arcadian because I am Cypriot and because my grandfather and my mother come from Vitina.”
